What a difference a voice makes as Aberdeen's 'angel' spreads word on city centre proposals

The public doesn't always take kindly to celebrities sticking their oar into political and civic debates. However the immediate impact of Aberdeen-born Annie Lennox's recent blogging, and subsequent media interest, on the plans for Union Terrace Gardens has undoubtedly given the people of the north east an unprecedented awareness of the current plight of the city centre – whichever side your opinion lies.

"Personally I think it should be down to the citizens of Aberdeen to decide whether they want to cover over the beautiful green heritage site at the heart of their city with concrete or not. I am only one voice, with one opinion, but perhaps my comments have helped to level up the debate, and take it out to the people themselves. There are just four weeks before a decision will be reached, and I would urge that everyone becomes proactive if they want to save Union Terrace Gardens."

A public debate has been announced for Thursday 18 February at the Salvation Army Citadel, 28 Castle Street, Aberdeen from 6.30pm. Chaired by Frank Doran MP it will see both Peacock Visual Arts and the City Square Project hear local opinion on each of their proposed schemes.
