Matthew Wilson's Edinburgh highlights
Edinburgh artist Matthew Wilson shares his favourite places to go and things to see across the city
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Matthew Wilson, an Edinburgh-based artist and educator.
What’s been a highlight of the last 12 months for you?
My solo exhibition, I thought you were real. I am real, at Custom House Gallery in Leith.
What’s coming up in the future for you?
Chaos and Control: Printmaking in Scotland Now, a group exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy, until 26 Jul. I'll be showing a print-based sculpture, Real Marble Dust I-V. The work was made during my time as an artist in residence at Dundee Contemporary Arts, where I focused on the use of more utilitarian materials and industrial techniques to retell the narratives shown in a series of mass-produced reproductions of classical Western art imagery.
Where do you recommend people go in Edinburgh?
A walk in the Pentland Hills: a quieter, larger, and less crowded Arthur's Seat.
Favourite place to eat?
Polentoni, an amazing little takeaway cafe/deli on Easter Road run by good eggs, Franco and Sarah. Make sure you get any of the topped focaccia, a custard-filled croissant, or a bag of their almond biscuits.
Favourite place to drink?
The Lioness of Leith. Hardly a hot take, but loads of people say it's the best pub in Leith and they're right. Good local pints, friendly staff, fun decor... feels like a distinct outlier that encapsulates the area.
Favourite shop?
I’d be lying if I said anything other than the Screwfix on Bonnington Road.
Why do you like living here?
It feels less like a city and more like a bunch of small, disparate towns glued together.
What annoys you about living here?
Everything that makes me think the city has a vendetta against cyclists... especially all the cobblestones.
Do you have an Edinburgh festivals survival tip?
If you're visiting, seek refuge in Summerhall's courtyard. A haven compared to every other Fringe venue hub. If you're local, embrace the idea of a fallow year.
