Ever since the dawn of Merseybeat, and the early days of a little-known quartet called The Beatles (not familiar? You will be), Liverpool has been renowned for its live music scene. There’s the Liverpool Echo Arena down by the docks, where all the big names and stadium-friendly acts come to bash out the hits, while just up the road in the Baltic Triangle, the revitalised warehouses of the Camp and Furnace complex play host to the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia (or just plain ‘Psychfest’, if you prefer).
The grand old Philharmonic Hall is still the place to catch everything from their award-winning orchestra to more refined pop artists, while the O2 Academy catches the vast majority of touring bands making their way through Merseyside. Further out of town lies the Olympia, while in the south end of the city Sefton Park hosts festivals such as Africa Oye and the Liverpool International Music Festival. Sound City Festival has now moved away from its city centre origins to its new home at Bramley-Moore Dock, but if smaller, grittier shows are more your bag, there’s always the DIY surroundings of Maguire’s Pizza Bar. That’s not all, of course.
