Southport’s cultural centre, The Atkinson, hosts theatre events, live music, and also holds a gallery and museum. The 19th century building is the perfect destination for families, tourists and arts fans with things to see and do both day and night. The art gallery has a permanent collection of fine art, sculpture, ceramics and prints, but also welcomes regular touring exhibitions — the gallery has previously displayed work by Matisse, L.S Lowry and Tracey Emin. In the museum you’ll find the interactive feature Between Land & Sea, displaying local history from prehistoric times to the modern era, while permanent exhibition Discover Ancient Egypt displays a collection that was previously hidden away for years. At night, the theatre and studio hosts regular live entertainment, including stand up comedy, live bands, classical music and touring plays, and it also hosts a number of folk, blues and jazz festivals throughout the year. Make sure to visit the Bakery cafe on your visit to try their freshly made artisan food, all made from local sources. [Charlotte Davies]
