The Citizen's Theatre (affectionally known as the Citz) is a reputed theatre, based in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. It's one of the few rare self-producing houses in Scotland that showcases company productions as well as touring shows.

The building was established as the Citizen's theatre in 1945, two years after James Birdie founded The Citizen's company.

Formerly a theatre that belonged to the people of Glasgow, separate and distinct from the London repertory companies, the Citz made theatre performances accessible and affordable to all audiences. The majority of the work produced by the venue consists of updated versions of classic pieces and new Scottish drama.

In line with its title, The Citizen's Company has a history of sticking it to the man. Take, for instance, their tansformation of an adjoining dance hall into The Close Theatre Club in 1965, allowing them to circumvent censorship and stage plays which were otherwise forbidden. Sort of like a theatrical speakeasy, the Close Theatre Club bar also remained open past the usual drinking hours, and had a reputation as one of the only watering holes which would serve up a stiff drink on a Sunday. There are also many rumours of ghostly hauntings – which obviously wins it bonus points.
