Soy Division. Like Joy Division, but Soy. Because vegan. It’s fantastic, you love it, we know you do, shut up.

With their ever increasing popularity, vegetarianism and veganism have moved in from the cultural fringes to become relatively mainstream lifestyles. Most restaurants will now make at least some effort to accommodate them and by now we all know all the compelling reasons for making the switch - animal products are largely less healthy and more destructive to the environment than their veggie counterparts and, of course, it seems safe to say that the animals don’t love the whole thing either. But we also all know the equally compelling if not quite as intellectual reason for remaining carnivorous – meat and cheese just taste so damn good.

Enter Soy Division. The former farmer’s market favourites have now taken up residence on Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands, quietly determined to prove that the little green “V” on the menu needn’t be a warning sign. With an impressive range of pastries, pizzas and flans, the intrepid little café finds ways to switch and swap out seemingly vital ingredients in any given recipe without hurting the taste of the final product.

These are people who can make a cheesecake without cheese. Does that make them witches? Who’s to say. The important thing is, that cheesecake is delicious.
