Situated just on the Eastern edge of the city centre, right next to where the Old College (now the University of Glasgow) used to stand, McCune Smith’s name roots it firmly in Glasgow’s history –the shipbuilding, globetrotting and enlightenment which citizens look back on with pride and the complicity in slavery which is too often buried. Dr James McCune Smith became the first African American anywhere in the world to hold a medical degree, studying at the same institution as the likes of anti-slavery philosophers Adam Smith and John Millar. The café doesn’t bombard you with his life story or plaster its walls with pictures of him, though its website is full of informative links and its staff will be happy to pointed anyone interested in the right direction. Beyond that, it's simply taken a man worth remembering and written his name up on a sign in the place where he made history.

This understated, value-driven approach characterises the Duke Street coffee shop – formed by two brothers raised on a farm in the Hebrides, they bring their passion for Scottish produce and home cooking to the city centre with minimal fuss. In their laid back, airy cafe, they insist on using only ethically-sourced, sustainable ingredients and champion local growers. With a range of sandwiches named after some of the nation’s historical figures, they make good on their promise to offer “a little taste of history in every bite” in a way that’s playful, fun and never preachy.

With top quality coffee and a fantastic range of breakfast and brunch options, McCune Smith is can feed your mind, soul and belly all at once.
