When it comes to cinema in Dundee, the city’s residents are well-served for both mainstream and arthouse screenings, with a host of film festivals taking place in the city each year.
Dundee Contemporary Arts is the go-to Dundee cinema for those hard-to-find non-blockbuster releases, with European and Asian releases rubbing shoulders with Oscar contenders, documentaries and repertory showings of classics from years gone by. The DCA’s two-screen cinema also regularly programmes films selected by the artists presenting in its upstairs gallery space, as well as playing host to a wide range of live-streamed screenings of productions from the National Theatre and New York’s Met Opera. In addition to all that, DCA also plays host to the annual Dundead horror film festival with its range of classic horror films and some of the best new horror films set to hit the screen in the coming months.
Elsewhere in the city, the cinema in Abertay University’s Hannah Maclure Centre focuses on video art screenings from artists from across the globe, Dundee’s Odeon and Cineworld multiplexes screen a huge range of mainstream releases alongside a selection of arthouse fare, and the city’s Bonar Hall becomes a mecca for sports documentary fans once a year for the Dundee Mountain Film Festival.
