For some people, discussion around art in Dundee centres around one venue which hasn’t even been built yet. V&A Dundee – the Victoria and Albert Museum’s first outpost outside London – is set to open on the city’s waterfront in summer 2018, with hopes of a Bilbaoesque regeneration inspired by the Kengo Kuma-designed building. Partnerships are already being built with local artists and the city’s art college, Duncan of Jordanstone, with the aim of hitting the ground running when the gallery opens its doors.
Currently, the premier space for art in Dundee is the aptly-titled Dundee Contemporary Arts, a vast multi-space gallery capable of displaying art of all stripes. The two gallery spaces are adaptable enough to host everything from cutting-edge video and light art to the more straightforward painting and sculpture, while the DCA also features a two-screen cinema, art shop, research centre developed with Dundee University, and much more besides. For fans of fine art, Dundee’s McManus Galleries house the city’s impressive collection, with a regular programme of exhibitions drawn from the in-house collection and elsewhere.
The two Dundee universities play a key role in art in Dundee, with regular exhibitions at Dundee University’s Cooper Gallery and Abertay’s Hannah Maclure Centre, while volunteer-run space Generator Projects just off the city’s Perth Road offers a great space for recent graduates to further their development and show off their work.
