Glasgow School of Art is an institution for creative education and research in fine art, design and architecture. The building was designed by the famous architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh who worked for the company that won an architectural competition in 1896 to design a new Glasgow School of Art. Sadly devastated by a fire in 2014, a large part of the building is currently in a restoration period to preserve and rebuild the remains of the unique art deco design. It is still used for higher education and research but is also an architectural monument in its own right, attracting thousands of visitors a year. In the basement of the building is the Archives and Collections Centre, an excellent resource for the study of art, design and architecture, which includes a wide range of materials including artworks, drawings, photographs and furniture. The Mackintosh Museum hosts a year round programme of exhibitions that work with artists, architects and designers, as well as students in varying years of their degree. Visitors can also enjoy regular tours of the space, taking you from top-to-bottom via Mackintosh wonder after Mackintosh wonder. Highly recommended.
