A supermarket and restaurant? Say what?! Though, when you get down to the nitty gritty it does appear to be rather a good idea: nip out for a pint of milk, come back full to the brim after caving in to those wafts of frying bacon drifting into aisle 3. Downstairs, in the nicer-than-Spar city centre shop, find all your basic necessities and one of the best booze sections a city centre offy is ever likely to provide. Not only is there every kind of Monin syrup you could ever imagine (it’s like Starbucks on acid), you can also pick up your standard hangover-inducing spirits. Up above, the kitchen serves delicious-sounding Asian-fusion dishes, such as black pudding with turmeric aioli, charred cauliflower steaks and mammoth Sunday roasts. Ambitious? Perhaps - but these shop and restaurant owners have already proved their worth with the Banyan Tree over in Castlefield.
