Glasgow Art Club was founded in 1867 by William Dennistoun and ten other amateur artists as a society to appreciate and assess each other's work. The club grew rapidly, moved to its existing premises on Bath Street in 1893 and now boasts hundreds of members. The space itself consists of two original town houses spread over five floors and contains some of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s earliest work in the form of feature fireplaces and decorative panels. It addition it houses two bars and restaurants, a library specialising in Scottish Art and several exhibition spaces. It can also accommodate all kind of outside events – such as weddings and private dining – and is equipped with presentation tools for seminars and meetings. Art classes are available in still life, portraiture and life drawing, and the club hosts seasonal art exhibitions as well as specific showcases. A bit of an all-round then, eh?
