Brel is one of the better bars on Ashton Lane, maintaining some individuality but playing it safe with its rustic furniture and familiar menu options. The bar is cosy when its half full but when its busy it seems, no matter where you stand, you are constantly getting bumped into as people go to the bar or toilets. Gigs in the relatively small conservatory are intimate but unless you're sitting at the front then you wont get a view of the performers. It suffers from having a rather unusual layout but remains charming, plus the staff are great and the bands are usually decent.
If you're into a more intimate dining experience, the Serge up the stairs serves the same a la carte menu as well as a belgian tapas style selection. All wines ae served by the glass and there week day £8.50 a bottle deal on wine is a real bargain. A great place to enjoy chat without the hustle and bustle.
