What's On Northwest 10-17 Sep: Body Clock + more

Zap by Simon Jay Catling | 10 Sep 2015

1. CLUBS | Body Clock
Soup Kitchen, Manchester. Thu 10 Sep, 11pm, from £8 here

Fresh to Manchester but a familiar face elsewhere, Factory Floor drumming piston Gabriel Gurnsey tonight launches his new club night, Body Clock, having recently relocated North from London. Such is Gurnsey's addiction to rhythm, we once saw him dragged off stage by a despairing tour manager as Factory Floor thundered their way beyond their allotted stage time. Joining him live for this inaugural party are fellow DFA signings Shift Work. Read one of our past interviews with Factory Floor here.
2. BOOKS | The Study
Manchester Museum. Fri 11 Sep ongoing, times vary, Free

Manchester Museum has been busy repurposing its entire top floor to reopen to the public as The Study, a new creative learning space. With bespoke high-tech furniture, an exhibition gallery, daily events, an aquaponics installation (a sort of two-part aquatic animal and plant life garden) and a study centre for in-depth academic research and access to the whole of the museum's collection, The Study aims to be a space where people can find new inspiration and headspace.
3. MUSIC | Lonelady
Central Library, Liverpool. Sat 12 Sep, 8pm, £8 here

It’s been some year for Julie Campbell, aka Lonelady: the Manchester-based solo artist has enjoyed plenty of acclaim for the steely glint of her post-punk inflected second album Hinterland, released on Warp. This special Central Library show in Liverpool is part of the Get it Loud in the Libraries programme, which has previously seen the likes of Young Fathers and East India Youth play among the region's books. Read our recent review of Lonelady playing live.
4. THEATRE | Dead Dog in a Suitcase
HOME, Manchester. Fri 11-Sat 26 Sep, times vary, from £15 here

Carl Grose’s Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other Love Songs) – based on The Beggar’s Opera by John Gay – returns to the Northwest following its world premiere in Liverpool last year. Still under the direction of Mike Shepherd and produced by Kneehigh, the play is a radical take on the plight of contract killer Macheath as he falls in love and faces the hangman’s noose.
5. CLUBS | ARMSCONTROL
24 Kitchen Street, Liverpool. Fri 11 Sep, 10pm, £3 OTD (£5 after 11pm)

Already one of Liverpool's key underground clubbing destinations just a year or so after it came into existence, 24 Kitchen Street launches a new night for the new season, with ARMSCONTROL promising "vogue culture, club edits and global scenes fighting against the rooftop raves, pulled pork office parties and vinyl only beardathons" – which fits in pretty well with the sort of attitude 24 Kitchen Street themselves have had over the past 12 months. Listen to what to expect here.
ADVERTISEMENT | Matthew Darbyshire: An Exhibition for Modern Living
25 Sep–10 Jan

An Exhibition for Modern Living draws together work from the first 10 years of Matthew Darbyshire’s career, including large-scale environments, sculptures and film. Darbyshire examines the complex languages of design and sculpture in his quest to unravel the various forms of social, symbolic and cultural capital within western society.

The title derives from the work he created for British Art Show 7 (pictured), inspired by the landmark exhibition held in the US in 1949 that led the way in democratising good design. Darbyshire’s contemporary equivalent is a call for critical reflection, replacing the promise and optimism of the original with a warning and sense of anxiety.
6. FOOD | 100 Greatest Manchester Beers Festival
Albert Square, Manchester. Mon 14-Sun 20 Sep, times vary, Free

The Manchester Food and Drink Festival returns on 10 Sep, with one of its standout events away from the competing restaurants and street food types being the 100 Greatest Manchester Beers Fest. Running from festival hub Albert Square all week, expect to see beers from the likes of local brewers Cloudwater, Runaway and Alphabet, among dozens of others. See what else is in our food news this month!
7. MUSIC | Richard Dawson + Asiq Nargile
Islington Mill, Salford. Tue 15 Sep, 7.30pm, £9 here

The mesmerising Northeastern folk troubadour Richard Dawson heads out on another journey around the UK over autumn, joined this time by Georgian saz (a long-neck lute) artist Asiq Nargile. Dawson is justly still riding high off the back of acclaim for his phenomenal recent album, Nothing Important, and comes to the Northwest after a summer that saw him curate an afternoon at the acclaimed Supersonic Festival. We should know, we were among those shouting the praise.
8. MUSIC | Denis Kozhukhin
St George's Hall, Liverpool. Wed 16 Sep, 7.30pm, £25 here

Quickly becoming one of the most respected Russian pianists of his generation, Denis Kozhukhin returns to Liverpool for the first time since 2013. He'll be playing a selection of Debussy's more thoughtful preludes as well as extracts from classic Beethoven sonatas 17 and 14, better known to you and me as Tempest and Moonlight.
9. MUSIC | Stephen Steinbrink + Julie Byrne
Studio 2, Liverpool. Sat 12 Sep, 7.30pm, £6.50 here

A pair of potential next American songwriting greats tour together this September, with Stephen Steinbrink (signed to Manchester-based Melodic Records in the UK, no less) and Julie Byrne – whose 2014 debut LP Rooms With Walls and Windows was an understated delight – making for a pretty snug fit. Read more of our September gig highlights here.
10. ART | Screaming Gander Gallery Launch
Screaming Gander, Manchester. Thu 10 Sep, 6pm, Free

Ancoats' regeneration continues apace with the opening of new contemporary arts gallery Screaming Gander in the area's CHIPS development. The opening night presents a showcase of new work by local photographer Lee Baxter, with his Sunsets and Swimsuits  exhibition (pictured) comprising images taken over a 15 month period spent observing life and industrial landscapes around the 'Ancoats Riviera'.
