Falko Konditormeister

A traditional German bakery based in Edinburgh and Gullane, Falko Konditortmeister sell an extensive range of handmade cakes, Hansel and Gretzel pretzels, fantastic breads and Baumkuchen (literally 'Tree Cake' – trust us, they're bloody huge!), making them a firm fixture on the Edinburgh foodie scene. If you manage to get a table (by no means a given), there are also options such as meat and cheese platters, homemade soups, and salads. But, let's face it, the cakes take the, well, erm, cake. And unlike other shall-not-be-mentioned bakeries, the main emphasis is on flavour rather than aesthetics. "I want to eat cakes. Not look at them", says Falko. We couldn't agree more.
