What's On Scotland 25 Aug-1 Sep: Fringe Musicals

You've got just a handful of days left to cram a last flurry of Fringe fun – luckily we're here with batch of recommendations including Counting Sheep, How to Win Against History and, of course, the fireworks. Plus SWMRS and Sub Club SoundSystem.

Bet you think you hate musicals. Bet you're sick to the back teeth of tomorrow, tomorrow, no business like show-business and all that jazz. We don't blame you. But guys – it's the FRINGE, and Fringe is notoriously packed with originality and hilarity.

There's a bounty of actually good musical theatre this year, from the acclaimed How To Win Against History (pictured) to the immersive politics (and free food!) of Counting Sheep, to the batshit B-side vibes of Apocalypse Cruise Ship Love Affair. You can even head to Baby Wants Candy, scream a suggested title and see an improvised musical unfold before your eyes. So give 'em a chance, whaddya say?

Sub Club Soundsystem 2016

BAaD, Glasgow. 27 & 28 Aug
The Sub Club Soundsystem weekender takes over Glasgow's Barras Art & Design Centre this weekend. Tickets have all but disappeared, so act quick if you don't want to miss out on what will surely be dynamite performances from the likes of Tale Of Us, Âme, Mano Le Tough, Joy Orbison b2b with Roman Flügel (pictured) and more. Image: Nadine Fraczkowski

Binged on the Fringe? If you’ve overindulged on the Festival and fear another battle through Royal Mile crowds, a tram ride along to Edinburgh Beer Factory could be just the remedy. Brewery tour slots are available from this weekend through to the end of September, and with original prints by Eduardo Paolozzi on display to accompany your Paolozzi lager, there’s no need to leave arts and culture back in the city centre. Book here.

Kathryn Elkin: Television
CCA, Glasgow, until 4 Sept, times vary, free
Telly buffs might take a liking to GSA grad Kathryn Elkin’s latest exhibition Television, a series of works in which the videosmith reworks proto pop videos, documentary interviews and talk shows to try and get to the bottom of what exactly makes something ‘televisual’. See her live show with Irene Revell on 26 Aug.

Electric Fields
Drumlanrig Castle, 26-27 Aug
Fringe mania getting to you? Hankering for a bit of personal space and rural calm? Well, we’re not promising that at Electric Fields (it's a music festival, after all), but it’s certainly a change of scenery. And when that change of scenery features the likes of Everything Everything, Fat White Family, Emma Pollock, C Duncan, Tuff Love and Honeyblood? Sounds like a plan, Stan. Image: JayJay Robertson

SWMRS
Broadcast, Glasgow. 30 Aug, 7pm
Electric Circus, Edinburgh. 31 Aug, 7pm

What with the Fringe wrapping up, you're gonna need something to look forward to. Back to the normality of good old gigging, we say. How about seeing pop punk prodigies slash surf rock royalty SWMRS? They’re playing Edinburgh and Glasgow so you’ve no reason not to, really. Besides Fringe flu, maybe.

Festival fireworks
Princes St Gardens, Edinburgh. 29 Aug, 9.30pm
It’s gunpowder galore on Monday as Jura Unbound draws to a close after a bookish bash from Vic Galloway, Tom Lanoye, Anneliese Verbeke, Adam Stafford and Khartoum Heroes (Charlotte Square, 7pm). Then, if you time things right and leg it to North Bridge, you might just catch the end-of-fest fireworks.
