Where to watch the US election in the North

If it's not too depressing to contemplate, here's our (student-friendly) guide to where to watch the US election results in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and beyond.

Chances are, you're already exhausted by the months of traumatic events and shouty media coverage leading up to this year's particularly fraught US presidential election. You're probably planning to spend Tuesday night curled into a fetal ball in the furthest recess of your room under ten blankets with an XL bucket of ice cream to cry into once eaten.

But if you're looking for companionship on this most nail-biting of evenings or simply need something to do when you can't sleep, those good ol' student unions have got you sorted with some all-night screenings and themed viewing parties.

We've also found a post-election commiseration breakfast, and an alternative election club night in case you'd rather dance away the pain.

If you're holding an election viewing party or you're a bar keeping your doors open late to screen the results, let us know and we'll add you to this list. Just email lauren@theskinny.co.uk with the details.

Watch the US election in Manchester

The Union Bar, University of Manchester Students Union
4pm 8 Nov - 10am 9 Nov, free, student ID required

The Union Bar in the Steve Biko building on Oxford Road will be staying open all night to show the US election coverage. Food will be served until 2am and drinks until 5.30am (so line that stomach, kids). Breakfast kicks in at 6am.

Gold Teeth: Rihanna Election Special
8 Nov, 10pm-3am, £4.50 advance, £5 on the door

It's not abundantly clear how this special edition of hip-hop club night Gold Teeth ties into the election beyond their advice to 'Vote RiRi' but, hell, we'll go with it. Goodness knows you're gonna need to burn off some of that anxious energy. It's only a stone's throw from the Union as well, so if the live coverage gets too much you could sack it off for a dance instead (last entry 11.30pm, mind).

Good Morning America!
US Election Breakfast at the People’s History Museum
9 Nov, 7am-11am, free (suggested donation £3)

Commiserate, jubilate or just plain masticate at the People's History Museum on Wednesday morning with a special election breakfast. As well as screening the final results, they'll be offering a proper American-style fry-up with bacon, fried egg, maple syrup and pancakes (£4.25) or pancakes, bananas and maple syrup served with an Americano coffee (£3.75).

While there, visitors are also encouraged to explore the work of another prominent American, artist Paul Peter Piech, in the Museum's new exhibition Dedicated to all Defenders of Human Freedoms. Born in New York in 1920, Piech was a humanitarian and campaigner as well as a printmaker. His work tackles global issues, reflects the horrors of war and makes stark political comment, resonating with issues that have been at the forefront of this year's US election campaign.

US election screening in Liverpool – with quiz!

Courtyard and Sphinx bar, Liverpool Guild of Students
10am 8 Nov - 10am 9 Nov, free, student ID required

The comfy Sphinx bar at Liverpool Guild of Students will be screening coverage from 11pm, with an election quiz beforehand at 10pm organised by the Politics Society plus insight from Politics department staff and experts as the evening unfolds. As well as American-style food throughout the night – think chicken wings, topped fries, nachos and pizza – there'll be an all-American breakfast for those who manage to stay awake 'til morning.

Viewing party and live radio in Leeds

Old Bar, University of Leeds
9pm 8 Nov - 6am 9 Nov, free, student ID required

Leeds also gets in on the quiz action, as the Students Union launch their election night proceedings at Old Bar with a special pub quiz from 9-11pm, followed by live coverage. You should be in knowledgeable hands, as on their Facebook page they've remembered that it's not just about the top dog, but also about electing members to the House of Representatives and Senate.

If you can't make it along, Leeds Student Radio will be broadcasting live from Old Bar at thisislsr.com, with results, analysis and music.

American food and cocktails in Sheffield

Bar One, University of Sheffield
10pm 8 Nov - 'until the next president is announced', free, student ID required

Sheffield Uni's Politics Society take over the Union bar, Bar One, for a party with giveaways and games, themed cocktails, American food served all night and more. Coverage will continue 'until the next president is announced' – they've shot themselves in the foot there if there's a recount.
