What would it sound like if The Libertines were sent into the Earth’s atmosphere in a spaceship to record their comeback album with no guitars and only Frank Sinatra LPs as inspiration? Golden Silvers have the answer: a frightfully charming mix of Gershwin-inspired chord progressions, psychedelic synths and Estuary accents. Gwilym Gold’s laid-back vocals are Pete Doherty as lounge-jazz raconteur, adding a touch of grit to the portamento keyboards of Please Venus. Elsewhere, Another Universe is sci-fi jazz balladry, whereas the doo-wop backing vocals on Magic Touch are a welcome reprisal of times past. The brilliance of True Romance is that, with its jazzy sheen, it yields the potential to draw Michael Buble fans into the edgy indie underworld of the Bronze Club; a wonderfully weird pop album, it might just manage to cross over into respectable society and kidnap a few listeners' hearts.
