Dent May – Across the Multiverse

Dent May's latest record since moving to LA is honest and raw

'This Mississippi boy sure ain’t used to this view,' Dent May croons on his latest record, his first since moving out to LA. Sources suggests he’s warmed to the place just nicely. 'Palm trees and champagne by swimming pool lights, 90210 treat me good tonight,' he sings in lackadaisical melisma, evoking the drunken afterglow of a messy and glamorous all-nighter.

But May could move anywhere on this planet and it probably wouldn’t bring him any closer to his true love. Time and again on Across the Multiverse, May finds himself insurmountably separated from his would-be soulmate, both physically and metaphysically.

Frankie Cosmos plays the part of May’s intergalactically estranged sweetheart on the title track, the pair sharing a lovesick duet across space and time full of cute astronomically-themed wordplay. Elsewhere, he confesses his everlasting devotion to a digital image, imploring the pixelated object of his affection to 'render yourself to me' atop dial-up static and a flange-tastic guitar part presumably ghostwritten by Matt Mondanile.

Which is to say there’s a fair degree of whimsy to Across the Multiverse, especially given May’s penchant for Hollywood-sized scores in the style of Randy Newman or Brian Wilson. But amongst that silliness lies an honest, raw desire for companionship.
