Frankie Cosmos @ La Belle Angèle, Edinburgh, 3 Aug

New York's Frankie Cosmos sets us up for a month of Edinburgh madness with brand new songs as well as some fan favourites

As Fringe previews are just beginning, the city of Edinburgh is overflowing with comedians, poets, actors and musical acts from all over the the world. Amidst this cabaret commotion, Ellis Jones of Bristol-based band Trust Fund takes the stage at La Belle Angèle. He jokingly opens his set by welcoming the audience to Venue 301 (La Belle's number in the Fringe programme), mocking the high number of spaces that have been turned into Fringe venues for the month.

Jones performs an acoustic rendition of a series of Trust Fund songs, commenting that his solo act is a bit harder than playing with Trust Fund. He takes requests from the audience to play Jumper and Finishing My Dinner, which usually ends with a trumpet solo when performed with the band.

After a short break a short-haired Greta Kline, aka Frankie Cosmos, takes the stage with her band. Rocking out to just a few bars, the sound cuts out and Kline realises her guitar isn’t producing any sound. She asks the crowd to have a chat amongst themselves, and despite the initial technical difficulties, the band are soon back on their feet.

Throughout the set Kline shares intense gazes with keyboardist Lauren Martin during heartfelt renditions of Fool and Too Dark. Familiar tracks Outside with the Cuties and Sappho have the whole crowd swaying and singing along in unison. Closing the show, we're treated to an as-yet-unreleased song as Kline bends backwards and drops to her knees. The show ends without fanfare and the laid-back indie-pop lingers over us as the band leave the stage.
