The Veils: Guest Selector

As they prepare for their European tour, which takes in Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow this September, The Veils' frontman Finn Andrews shares some of his favourite tracks

With a critically acclaimed fifth album barely behind them, The Veils kept up the momentum, following 2016’s Total Depravity with the three track EP Acoustic Session at Roundhead, recorded during the band’s recent New Zealand tour. Now they’re in David Lynch’s new series of Twin Peaks. "Beyond the fact that we're in Twin Peaks, I can't say a word. But I was very excited to do it," explains lead singer Finn Andrews. "There's only a few people I've been in awe of my whole adult life; Tom Waits is one, and David Lynch is another.

"I've loved everything David has made, so it was amazing being close to him while he worked.” Unable to tease out any more juicy details about their appearance in the much-loved cult series, we settled on chatting to Andrews about the tracks which have inspired him along his career. You can listen to all the songs in the player at the bottom of this page.

Cesaria Evora – Sodade
[Miss Perfumado, 1992]

I was played this song driving home from the last day of making our record and it made me think 'Why do I even bother?' but you know, in a good way. Truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.

Sharon Van Etten – Tarifa
[Are We There, 2014]

We got to meet Sharon while we were filming the Twin Peaks stuff and I went and looked her up after. I really love this song, play it every day I do.

Warpaint – Lissie's Heart Murmur
[The Fool, 2010]

I thought I hated Warpaint because everyone kept talking about how cool they were for years, but then it turns out they are really fucking cool. Annoying. This song sounds great at night under red light. Womb-like, dreamy...

Nina Simone – Plain Gold Ring
[Little Girl Blue, 1958]

My friend Ngaio said that if she was a wrestler this would be her entry music. I now think of that every single time I hear it.

Mercedes Sosa – Luna Tucumana
[Con sabor a Mercedes Sosa, 1968]

Ugh, why do I bother!! So unbelievably beautiful.

Hinds – Warts
[Leave Me Alone, 2016]

My sister and her girlfriend took me to see Hinds play in London a few months ago and I had such a great time. This song is so much fun.

Fazerdaze – Take it Slow
[Morningside, 2017]

Amelia is from New Zealand and she's coming for your heart in a really big way...

Lucinda Williams – Ventura
[World Without Tears, 2003]

Every time we're in LA we play this song as we're driving through town. I'm quite a latecomer to the rest of Lucinda's stuff but she's changed my life. Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone is another great record to check out.

Gillian Welch – Caleb Meyer
[Hell Among the Yearlings, 1998]

I'm still trying to work this song out on guitar.

Cat Power – Cross Bones Style
[Moon Pix, 1998]

No song reminds me of my youth in quite the same way as this one. Not necessarily pleasant aspects either. Messy, painful, indispensable.

The Veils play The Wardrobe, Leeds, 8 Sep; The Garage, Glasgow, 9 Sep; Sound Control, Manchester, 15 Sep. A full list of tour dates can be found here.
