Mogwai announce new album Atomic

Glasgow post-rock quartet Mogwai have announced details of new album Atomic, their first studio project following the departure of guitarist John Cummings.

The new album is comprised of reworked versions of the band's soundtrack to Mark Cousins' documentary Atomic, Living in Dread and Promise which premiered last year to mark the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War. It's the band's third soundtrack album, following their scores for Douglas Gordon's Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait and the critically-acclaimed French drama Les Revenants.

Announcing the album, guitarist Stuart Braithwaite said: "The Atomic soundtrack is one of the most intense and fulfilling projects we've taken on as a band. Ever since we went to Hiroshima to play and visited the peace park this has been a subject very close to us. The end results, both the film score and the record are pieces I'm extremely proud of." The release will feature The God Machine / Sophia collective guitarist Robin Proper-Sheppard, Robert Newth and frequent collaborator Luke Sutherland. Listen to U-235 and find the full tracklist below.

Last year, the band announced plans to perform their soundtrack at a special showing of Cousins' film at the 2016 Edinburgh International Festival, with more live dates to be announced shortly. Mogwai marked their 20th anniversary in 2015 with two-night runs at the Roundhouse in London and the Glasgow Barrowlands – read our five-star review from their "majestic" Glasgow residency.

Atomic is released on 1 April via Rock Action; tickets for Mogwai's EIF 2016 show go on sale on 16 April.
