The Voodoo That You Do

Feature by Clare Sinclair | 12 Aug 2011

The Voodoo Rooms, Blond Ambition and O’Connor Ents have teamed up to fill the evening with glamour and opulence. The six performances move from old school juggling skill through Des O’Connor’s brand of subversive cheek to electro nightclubbing.

There’s hardly a better venue for classic style variety and the setting of the Ballroom –compact and bijou – suits the acts well. Like Vive Le Cabaret, the bill showcases the best of the neo-cabaret gang, and throws in a new format via The Bitch Doctors – a chat-show designed to heal the heart, mind and body – and a twisted take on the classic revue.

Voodoo Revue tantalises with rotating and core casts – hosted by the ubiquitous O’Connor. He flips with ease between roles, chairing The Bitch Doctors as the professor of the mind aim to healing through improvised song and tricks.

Abi Roberts Takes You Up The Aisle is a more intimate affair altogether, talking – and singing – us through the loves (and losses) of her life up until her recent marriage. Three Balls and A New Suit has Mat Ricardo contemplating juggling. Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer apologies for his role in inventing hip-hop, before 'Electro Swing Speakeasy' White Mink turns the Ballroom into a night club with acts.

Either as a whole evening – or as a stop on a longer tour of the night – The Ballroom programme holds a flame for the old school variety and new school cabaret.
