If, like us, you've been receiving some rather odd transmissions these last few weeks, you'll be curious to know what Sounds from the Other City's art directors IMPATV (Islington Mill Public Access TV) have planned for the event.

"Sounds from the Other City is annual cause for much celebration," say the artists. "This year, in its 13th incarnation, things could be different. It’s dark times. It’s unlucky times..."

But do not fear: "IMPATV can offer you protection, with an invitation to immerse yourself in the fantasy cult Sound of the New Dawn!"

How, you might ask? Let them explain: "We have developed a series of methods to keep you safe. Follow us into the future!"

First: The talisman. "This talisman was created as a symbol of our protection."

Second: The glove. "Incorporating the talisman into this talismanic glove, you too can be protected from evil juju and bad spirits!" Gloves will be handed out throughout the festival. To activate your glove, simply follow the simple steps in this instructional video:

Third: The procession. "A procession for all attendees with their gloves will take place on the day, headed by our exultant leader and the magnificent Girl Sweat Pleasure Temple Ritual Band. Look out for more information about the times and whereabouts of our congregation!"

Fourth: The totem poles. "13 totem poles will be erected around the site to guide you on your way. Look out for them outside key venues and areas."

Easy, right? IMPATV have also recruited a special team of artists to the congregation, to provide visual stimulus across venues. We're excited to reveal that the visual artists at this year's Sounds from the Other City will be:

Innerstrings, providing psychedelic visuals for Heavenly Records and Night Fantasy at The Old Pint Pot; Sam Weihl, whose work you may know from Liverpool Psych Fest and who'll be bringing the atmos to the Now Wave stage at Unit 5; Joe Whitmore, who'll be devising a scheme for the Beauty Witch stage at The Crescent pub; and finally, Gareth Hustwaite, who'll be joining forces with Matt Woodham taking over Islington Mill.

And if you have any troubles, questions, worries or fears – not just regarding your talismanic glove – then IMPATV have set up a special dedicated helpline. Find out how to call in with the video below.

More about the art directors

IMPATV was born from a love of 80s and 90s public access television and alternative music shows. Since 2015, they've been harnessing a unique visual aesthetic inspired by the defunct media of public access television, appropriating a lust for the oddness and experimenting within. They combine obsolete and modern technology in order to broadcast and stream to you a plethora of weird and wonderful live music, performance and dance around the UK.

If you were at Sounds from the Other City last year, you'll remember that they teamed up with promoters Bad Uncle to bring you SFTOCTV: a nine-hour livestreamed TV extravaganza, broadcast direct from Caustic Coastal’s warehouse.

(Do you have an idea for a video you'd like to make? IMPATV can help you create it. Or if you already create videos, you can still get in touch: IMPATV aim to showcase independent filmmakers' work. All submissions welcome! impatv@impatv.com)

More ways to get involved

To help capture the vibe of this year's Sounds from the Other City, The Skinny is teaming up with IMPATV to present Sights of the New Dawn (see what we did there?!).

Simply tag your photos, videos and tweets from the festival with #SFTOC and they'll appear on our hashtag wall at Islington Mill, creating rolling coverage of the day from all corners of the site.

So whether you’ve caught an impromptu gig or parade, sighted a mysterious occurrence or just want to tell everyone about the amazing band you're watching, use the hashtag to contribute to our panopticon of content. With Sights of the New Dawn, you become the all-seeing eyes of Sounds from the Other City. After the festival we'll be compiling our favourite posts into a multi-voiced review, celebrating the true spirit of the festival.
