Suuns on who to see at Le Guess Who 2016

Ben Shemie gives us a few tips on who to catch from the Suuns-curated stage at this year's festival

Le Guess Who? is a four-day festival in Utrecht with an impressively eclectic approach to music, played out in the venues of one of the Netherlands' prettiest cities. Last year's affair was a triumph, eaturing stand-out sets from The Notwist and Mikal Cronin. For their 2016 edition, however, they're taking a different approach.

Headlined this year by Suuns, Savages, Julia Holter and Wilco, they've taken the step of asking those bands to curate their own stages, resulting in a fascinating mixture of the weird and the wonderful. The line-up, unsurprisingly, is a vast and potentially daunting thing – but fear not! Here Suuns' own Ben Shemie gives us the lowdown on some of the brightest stars lighting up the stage between 10-13 November.

Jerusalem in my heart – Koll Lil-Mali7ati Fi Al-Khimar Al-Aswadi

[Mo7it Al-Mo7it, Constellation Records, 2013]

"Our hometown homeboy and one of our best friends. An amazingly original composer and collaborator. We've all zoned out to this track many times on tour and it's a bomb. Inspired music."

Brian Case – Pattern 1

[Tense Nature, Hand in the Dark Records, 2016]

"Brian has been playing music forever in a lot of influential bands. Currently we are touring with him as he supports his first solo release. It's heavy, dark, leftfield electronica, and it's deep. This track is a cut from his latest record and is a nod to the heavy basslines of his live show."

Jlin – Expand

[Dark Energy, Planet Mu, 2015]

"We were really hoping Jlin would play Le Guess Who? this year. This track is a manic jam that get the listener lost in syncopated beats. The fact that she will be playing in the same line-up as RPboo is a real treat."

Alessandro Cortini – Stambecco

[Risveglio, Hospital Productions, 2015]

"Like a lot of his tunes, this jams pulses and flows with deep rhythms without ever needing a kick or snare drum. It's ambient music that moves and never tires."

Marie Davidson – Denial

[Adieux au Dancefloor, Cititrax, 2016]

"Another shout-out to our hometown of Montreal. This tune is great and crazy because it fills in the more experimental gaps that we like about her music. Her live show is hard-hitting electro but has a certain looseness and experimentation that keeps it fresh and, of course, dark."
