Mikal Cronin – Turn Around (live at Le Guess Who?)

Watch this live performance from Mikal Cronin's Utrecht performance – a one-off show, backed by strings and horns, exclusively for this year's Le Guess Who? festival

Mikal Cronin is a singer-songwriter from the US with three albums to his name. You may know him as the bass player in the Ty Segall Band, or perhaps even as a member of garage-punkers Epsilons, but since the 2011 release of his self-titled solo debut, he's gone from strength to strength as a performer in his own right. This year's MCIII sees his power pop smarts and knack for windswept melody coalesce into something even brighter and bolder than what's gone before, dripping with nuance and subtlety while lavishly dressed in orchestral flourishes. It's the moment when he steps firmly away from the category marked 'has potential' and announces himself as an artist of genuine, realised quality.

This year's Le Guess Who? festival in Utrecht presented Cronin with a one-off opportunity to perform with strings and horns, adding a luscious icing to his thoroughly melodic cake, and we were there to witness the performance in all its glory. In our review, we described it as "an absolute joy to behold", but thanks to the good people at Le Guess Who?, you can see a track from the show for yourself.

Turn Around, recorded live at TivoliVredenburg, is taken from the aforementioned MCIII, which is out now on Merge Records. Le Guess Who has already announced their first act for 2016, with Wilco set to play the festival's opening night next November.
