Just Jack - Writer's Block

Tells a story without giving away what happens, leaving you intrigued and amused, your craving for funk satisfied.

A pleasingly throwaway lyric, just clever enough to undermine its cliches with a sly wink and a nod, rides a smooth, funky little beat on North Londoner Just Jack's latest offering. He's not trying to be a rudeboy like Mike Skinner, nor does he think he is Pharrell Williams. He is just Just Jack, and his music is refreshingly unpretentious. It tells a story without giving away what happens, leaving you intrigued and amused, your craving for funk satisfied. Superior pop, weirdly like a Saint Etienne b-side; this bodes well for the forthcoming follow-up to 2003's offbeat 'The Outer Marker'. [Bram Gieben]
