Jacks out of the box

Article by Antony Sammeroff | 19 Aug 2011

Knocking from the inside of a box. A Hand slips out. Three Hands. Five Hands. Three little rascals emerge from the chest and, to a canny theme cunningly composed by Phillipa Herrick, set about turning this crafty crate into a workshop. Fantastic.

Welcome to the Alchemystorium - the strangest café at the Fringe. Your coffee comes with a date and a magic spell to make sure the two of you get on. It’s not voodoo when performed in the aid of love.

Not a single word spoken the whole piece - it’s all in the facial expressions of three accomplished physical performers (Lizzie Franks, Katie Cooper and Sam Worboys .) They regard everything with child-like wonder and each of the three brings a very distinct and yet mystical air to their roles, quite to complement their impish goblin-like grunts and gleeful chirps.

Cinnamon stick with that?
