Silent but Deadly

Feature by Colin Chaloner | 07 Aug 2011

Silent centres on the life of Tino, a beggar and a suicide, who emerges from his grave to recount his life in harrowing detail. He is a darkly humourous and complex character, by turns swelling with righteous indignation or muttering to himself as he scuttles across the stage, but relentlessly charming, always articulate, observant and idiosyncratic.

Silent is the work of solo performer Pat Kinevane, a six foot Irishman who draws together his vast experience as a dancer, a writer and an actor for stage and screen to create this follow up to Forgotten, another celebrated solo piece which many will have seen in its five years of touring.

Kinevane has an uncanny ability to fill a room and to balance an aggressive intensity with humility and compassion, pinning you to your seat as he looks you directly in the eye, right into the darkest recesses of your soul, and says nothing, simply continues his tale.

The writing is filled with graphic visual scenes, communicated with a lean minimalism which is only possible for someone who can move and speak the way Kinevane can. The result is a triumph - a brilliantly crafted demonstration of everything that is possible in live performance.
