Stuck/Piece

Caroline Simon talks about her solo that looks for more...

"The original concept  of stuck piece was political and came out of frustration," says Caroline Simon. A member of resistdance, she was chatting with artistic director Silke Z "about how funders wanted us to make "big pieces" as opposed to solos and duets, but most of them didn't seem to be willing to support these big productions financially."

From this came her intimate, funny and honest response, with ripples of insight into how a solo artist would "just explain what they do, without doing it, describing the lighting they would have, the scenery they would dance in if they would have the finances to pay it, the amazing jumps they would do if they had money to train..."

Simon effortlessly moves across the stage becoming, by turn, dancer, lighting, choreographer, projections and her own dance partner. The serious intentions led to a work of satire, and laughter.

"Yes, there is humour in the piece, but not only," she says. "It's laughter which transforms into something very intimate, emotional and true. The audience receives it in the same way wherever I play. They all laugh and are touched at the exact same places. Dancers get a little bit more of the "inside jokes", but I always get direct feedback from the audience. Which is very nice!"

In the tradition of art without funding, stuck piece takes its place alongside Forced Entertainment's Spectacle as an example of what can be done when ambition triumphs over poverty.
