Brandon Street | Leeds LS12 2EB
Leeds’s canal system was once one of the industrial veins of the country, carrying boats of cotton along the River Aire. With recently erected flats and the Royal Armouries situated along part of the old thoroughfare, the canals are now gaining a reputation as an upmarket enclave in the city.
However, when it comes to post-industrial charm, Canal Mills has it by the boatload. Housed in a renovated 18th-century textile mill, the multi-function venue provides a red brick aesthetic with an independent vibe that has become the trademark of this northern city.
Regular shows by DJ Mr Scruff, local independent markets, brewers fairs and some astounding music bookings have helped to quickly establish Canal Mills as a reputable venue for all manner of events. [Edy Hurst]
