Artisan Roast is serious about its coffee. If you engage the friendly staff in coffee conversation you risk getting the lowdown on beans, blends, the roasting process, the importance of the temperature of the milk and the perfect pour... still, be grateful. Be very grateful as you sip a sumptuous chilli mocha, or one of the best flat whites Edinburgh has to offer.
This was the very first Artisan Roast to open up, way back in 2007, just as the craft coffee boom was kicking off. They've honed their trade and still draw in hoardes of coffee lovers for cups of their perfectly-brewed Joe. It's a cosy place to sit in, with a variety of stools and sofas to choose from, although things get a bit cramped when it's busy (and it's always busy). As well as coffee, they do a good selection of loose leaf teas, as well a plethora of tasty cakes and croissants – but once they're gone, they're gone, so it's best to head down early if you're after a sweet treat or a bowl of steaming hot soup.
Seeking a new coffee-spot where the beans are fresh and the milk is perfectly steamed? Nice pick, pal - Artisan Roast is a total champ. Every year The Skinny holds a Food and Drink Survey, where we put out the feelers for the best bars, cafes and restaurants in town. Artisan roast made it into the winners' lineup within the category of Best Cafe for 2017, as well as 2014 and 2015. Check out the results of this year's survey here to find out who else made the cut.
