Pilrig St Paul's Church

If there's something Edinburgh's nae bad at, it's putting our pretty buildings to damn good use. Especially our churches - we're really good that that. Take the Assembly Roxy, a theatre based in the erstwhile Lady Glenorchy's Church, for example.

Something similar's gone on down in Leith with Prilig St Paul's, an occasional space which hosts live bands and events in its main hall. The performance space is only wee, with a modest capacity of 100. Not a complaint by any means - watching a gig in an ecclesiastical room with only 99 other souls is a pretty ethereal and ambient experience.

The main hall can be hired out for birthday parties and the like, too. There’s no bar inside (come on, though, it’s a church), so it’s usually BYOB, or whoever’s hiring will sort something out.

To sum up, it's a lovely space down in Leith with a nice sense of community and a super-friendly gig venue too. Braw.
