From its humble beginnings in an abandoned Lawnmarket brothel in 1963, 'the Trav' now has two performance spaces – seating 100 and 350 respectively – in the arts quarter, just off Lothian Road. Widely considered the number one writing theatre in Scotland, both in terms of production and innovation, it provides support to contemporary playwrights – having launched the careers of writers such as John Byrne and Liz Lochhead. It produces an average of six Traverse Theatre Company productions or co-productions a year, as well as putting on plays, adaptations, dance, physical theatre, puppetry and contemporary music from visiting companies across the UK.

If you’re not content to just spectate or laze away the day in their popular bar/café, the Traverse also runs a regular series of workshops, readings and discussions for those of you looking for a bit of inspiration or advice on your journey to theatrical stardom. In short, it's an Edinburgh Institution.
