A firm favourite with local bands and punters alike, Bannermans is a laid-back bar tucked away semi-underground on Edinburgh's Cowgate. Boasting an extensive and varied gig schedule – indeed, the venue promises live music six nights a week – they're firm supporters of local talent, often looking for bands to fill regular slots. Bannermans also produce an annual series of compilation CDs featuring bands who've graced their stage, which are available for free at the bar and various places across the city. Yep, pretty committed to that whole thing.
Karaoke Tuesdays and Open Mic Sundays are firm favourites with the regulars, with hot food, real ale and an eclectic whisky collection on hand to keep you fuelled - or at least lubricated. Bonuses include cheap pool and good banter from a (broadly) rock and indie crowd. The mirrored toilets may well make you regret that last flaming sambuca, but what's an embarrassing walk into a solid object between friends, eh?
