Alternative Romance

We're sorry to be the ones to remind you, but it's Valentine's Day this week. It's alright though, because we hate it as much as you do, and we've come up with a list of interesting happenings that won't depress the shit out of you, whether you're partnered up or foreveralone.

If you're moving V-Day forward to the weekend, check out Broadcast's free screening of Bon Iver, Live in Concert. Crafty daters could go make some acrylic Jewellery at Primitive Painters' Romeo + Juliet inspired workshop. 11 Feb also sees the opening of Talbot Rice Gallery's Between Poles and Tides exhibition – an unconventional date choice, sure, but there'll be badass tattooed figurines and leopards. Plus, Kid Canaveral are reprising their annual Lumber Party, ft. The Drink, Rides of Christ and Lost Map DJs.

On the 14th itself, we're keen for lols at The Stand's Anti-Valentine's show and grooves at Sneaky Pete's Slow Jams Soul Jam.

Menace Beach

Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh, 15 Feb, 7pm

This week's your chance to catch Leeds grunge pop (or 'waspy pop', in their own words) group Menace Beach IRL. They're fresh offa the release of new album Lemon Memory, so will be armed with new tunes (and bangers from previous EP Super Transporterreum) alike. Image: Stuart Moulding

The exhibition is named after a movement dedicated to removing the superiority from whiteness and the alienation of blackness.

The Winter's Tale
Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, 10 Feb-4 Mar, 7.30pm (matinees Weds & Sat 2.30pm)
Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale has a lot going for it; wit and wisdom, passion and the pastoral, and the relatability to be dropped right into 2017 with ease and elegance. And that’s exactly what director Max Webster has done, recontextualising this literary treat and giving it a Scottish identity.

NT Live: Saint Joan
Various venues across Scotland, times and prices vary
Keeping things theatrical, we move on to National Theatre Live's screening of  Saint Joan in cinemas across the UK. Directed by Josie Rourke and featuring Gemma Arterton as the revolutionary herself, it’s set to be a striking piece, and participating in a country-wide screening of it sounds prrrretty cool.
