What's On Scotland 27 Aug - 3 Sep: Fringe Previews

It's Fringe-mas eve! Hit the previews as Sofie Hagen's new show and Found Footage Festival launch their Fringe runs, or run away to Glasgow for an art hypermarket, Skating Polly at Broadcast and a multicultural feast...

What with all the posters, scaffolding and that unique combo of anticipation and premature exasperation, Fringe-mas eve is a complicated season. You've got two options; A) hop aboard the preview train and hustle yourself into some stand-up on the cheap, or B) feign ignorance and seek respite in Glasgow. This Zap is designed to facilitate both.

If you're in camp A), get things off to a glitteringly witty start with comedian Sofie Hagen's new show Dead Baby Frog at Bedlam. This new piece discusses anger, funerals and her grandfather’s psychopathy and should have you in bittersweet stitches. (2-28 Aug, 2pm). We'd  also suggest Found Footage Festival, at which Joe Pickett of The Onion and Nick Prueher of the Late Show with David Letterman trawl through their absolutely ludicrous VHS collection on a voyage of nostalgia and downright batshittery (Cowgate, Edinburgh, 3-27 Aug, (not 14), 10.40pm).

Hypermarket: Art Car Boot Sale
SWG3, Glasgow, 29-30 Jul, 11am

SWG3 bring together two of humankind's greatest creations (that'd be art and car boot sales) this weekend. With offerings from dozens of artists including Rachel Duckhouse, Jim Lambie, Claire Barclay, Tessa Lynch, and more, you're sure to stumble upon something wicked.

All The Young Nudes
Whitespace, Edinburgh, 1 Aug, 6.30pm
At this time of year it's important to make the most of whatever pockets of peace you can find. That in mind head, to the first of All The Young Nudes' weekly festival life drawing clubs for a night of beer, models and good tunes. Go sketch your way to serenity (or, at the very least, smugness). Image: Louise Lockhart

Skating Polly
Broadcast, Glasgow. 31 Jul, 7pm
Oklahoma two-piece Skating Polly came together after improvising a set of songs at their family's Halloween party. They're responsible for a mature, lo-fuzzy, pop-rock sound, complete with clever lyrics and influences ranging from 70s punk to early 90s alt-rock. This week they play Broadcast with guests Hands Off Gretel, before heading to Edinburgh's Queen's Hall on 1 Aug in support of Kate Nash.

Glasgow’s mixture of brewing and distilling heritage, incredible hospitality and raucous live crowds comes together in this July’s King Tut’s Summer Nights series, sponsored by Auchentoshan. This final weekend of the 17 day festival still packs some favourites, like local pop merchants Fauves and Model Aeroplanes, so be sure to nab your tickets while they’re still hot. EAF: The Slave's Lament + Black Burns
Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. On now, times vary
If EAF's massive programme is looking a little intimidating, make a start at the Scottish National Portait Gallery with two powerful exhibitions: Graham Fagen's The Slave's Lament – a video installation curated by Hospitalfield, Arbroath and exhibited at Scotland + Venice 2015; and Douglas Gordon’s Black Burns, a special commission which also problematises Scotland's literary icon.

Frankie Cosmos
La Belle Angèle, Edinburgh. 3 Aug, 7.30pm
New Yorker Greta Kline, who performs under the name Frankie Cosmos, brings her laid-back, dreamy indie-pop to Edinburgh’s La Belle Angèle this week. Her Next Thing album was one of our favourites of 2016 and we can’t think of a much better way to ease yourself into a month of what for most Edinburgh residents will be utter chaos. Frankie Cosmos for the win.
