What's On Scotland 23-30 Mar: Mother's Day

This week in Scottish culture: Happy Hour at The Food and Flea, Edinburgh Asian Film Festival, Rob Auton and remembering to buy our mums a card on Sunday...

Feature by Kate Pasola | 23 Mar 2017

First thing's first, IT'S MOTHER'S DAY THIS WEEKEND. You're welcome (we nearly forgot too). If she's in town, why not peruse our Food & Drink Survey winners and take her out for for a giant dollop of mom-bonding? Otherwise, let's see to planning a weekend full of guilt-free mooching and merry-making, safe in the knowledge we're in Mama's good books.

Heaps of glorious exhibitions across Scotland finish up this Saturday and Sunday, including  Caribbean Queer Visualities at Tramway, Out of the Frame at Edinburgh Printmakers, and the BP Portrait Award 2016 display at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Read more in art news.

If you're all out of wholesome and fancy something hedonistic, head to The Glue Factory for the launch of Animal Farm's new series, Blackout. It's a techno marathon lasting ELEVEN HOURS, and features Manchester’s Stephanie Sykes, Abdulla Rashim and Berlin talents Somewhen and Dax J (25 Mar, 4pm-3am).

Happy Hour at The Food and Flea
The Food + Flea Market, 4pm-10pm, free
Spring has sprung (apparently), and on the odd bits of sunshine we're getting, nothing quite hits the spot more than a bev, a  decent snackeroo, and an alfresco natter with interesting people. That's where The Food + Flea Market comes in, with their Thursday/Friday after work club down on Sibbald Walk, New Street. Top street food traders and beer from £3? We're in. Image: Kim Thompson

Rob Auton: Sleep Show
The Stand, Edinburgh, 29 Mar, 8.30pm
The Stand is on a ROLL this month, with their Edinburgh outpost giving Glasgow Comedy Fest a run for its money. Here's yet another highlight from their programme this month; Rob Auton. He's a whimsical fella, but he sure knows how to construct a nugget of lyrical tomfoolery that'll warm and wrench your heart simultaneously. His new show, The Sleep Show is aimed at anyone who likes sleeping.

Edinburgh Asian Film Festival
Filmhouse, Edinburgh, 24-26 Mar, times vary
This week's your chance to see the much-discussed Lipstick Under My Burkha (winner of GFF 2017 Audience Award) as part of Edinburgh Asian Film Festival at The Filmhouse. The handpicked programme also features Aberdeen-based director Hassan Nazer's Afghan drama Utopia, and an opening gala screening of John Upchurch's Mango Dreams.

Grandaddy
Potterrow, Edinburgh. 23 Mar, 7pm
Wait for years for Jason Lytle and co. to come to town, and then they show up twice in the space of six months. Hot on the heels of their Summerhall show last year and the release of five-star new album Last Place, it's a chance to catch the live version of an album that's loaded with ideas and melodies from cover to cover.
