  • Being In A Place

The Folk Film Gathering is back in Edinburgh with a sharply curated lineup of work celebrating community, place and people. Running 12 to 29 June in various venues across the city, you’ll find a programme centred on what the organisers call “a dialogue of solidarity” between Ukraine and Scotland, which draws connections across the rich cinematic heritage of both countries.

One highlight speaking to this dialogue is a screening of Alexander Dovzhenko's blistering war film Arsenal, which screens with a newly minted soundtrack by Scottish electronic duo Dalhous. Elsewhere you’ll find a brace of docs exploring the phenomenon of second sight in the Outer Hebrides (Alison McAlpine’s Second Sight and Joshua Bonnetta’s The Two Sights) as well as several rarely-screened Scottish classics from the BBC’s Play for Today series. Also look out for Being In A Place, the latest film from Scottish artist Luke Fowler, which acts as a poetic tribute to the legendary Orcadian filmmaker Margaret Tait and the distinctive local landscapes that shaped her work.

CHVRCHES

Barrowland, Glasgow. 10&11 Jun, 7pm

Synth-pop heroes CHVRCHES make a hometown return this weekend with a brace of shows at the Barras. Return tickets are available on both nights, and we’d heartily recommend you pick them up: as well as offering endlessly catchy pop melodies, this trio put on a spectacular live show.

Modern Studies

The Old Hairdresser's, Glasgow. 15 Jun, 7.30pm

Another Glasgow gig to get excited about is a new show from Modern Studies. Expect lush vocal harmonies, woozy pastoral chamber pop and intricate arrangements from the Scottish quartet. Support comes from Fergus MacDonald’s Hank Tree and five-piece indie-rock outfit Upturned Boats.

BBC SSO present Safety Last!

City Halls, Glasgow. 10 Jun, 8pm

Harold Lloyd dangling from a 12-story-high clock face in Safety Last! is surely one of the most indelible images in all film history. This silent-era masterpiece turns 100 this year, and the BBC SSO are marking the occasion by performing live to the film with a new score by legendary composer Carl Davis.

Hairspray turns 35

Glasgow Film Theatre. 12-13 Jun

John Waters' sweetest movie turns 35 this year and it’s getting a loving rerelease in cinemas – including GFT. Ricky Lake is a delight as the film’s rebellious teen heroine who’s attempting to win a local TV dance show in Baltimore. But it's not all froth: she also joins the fight against racial discrimination in 60s America.

↪ Glasgow Jazz Festival

Various venues, Glasgow. 14-18 Jun

Jazz stars descend on Glasgow this week, with gigs spread across the city. Some highlights: Shetland’s Norman Willmore takes inspiration from his Norse roots at Glad Cafe (14 Jun); Saxophonist Camilla George blends Afrofuturism, hip-hop and jazz at St Luke’s (16 Jun); and Graham Costello delivers minimalist, cinematic jazz at Drygate (17 Jun).

→ Missing Persons Club: DJ Gigola

The Berkeley Suite, Glasgow. 9 Jun, 11pm

Berlin punk techno princess DJ Gigola heads to Missing Persons Club for a high-octane night of back-to-back tracks with fast electronica wizard MCR-T. Support comes from techno and ghetto house DJ VXYX and Missing Persons Club regular DJ Smoker.

→ Leith Festival and Gala Day

Various venues, Leith, Edinburgh. 10-18 Jun

Leith has trams now! Why not try them out while attending Leith Festival? The highlight is, of course, the annual Gala Day, but you’ll find a whole mess of other activities throughout the week, from comedy nights to beach parties to vinyl markets to parkour lessons.
