First Look: MacGruber

Feature by Nicola Balkind | 25 May 2010

A spoof of America's 1980s and 90s hit TV series MacGyver, MacGruber is the latest from the SNL cast. It's so similar to the original, in fact, that the creator of MacGyver, Lee David Slotoff, is seeking legal rights to the film. The recurring Saturday Night Live skit follows in the footsteps of other SNL spin-offs such as Wayne's World, Coneheads, and Office Space to become a feature-length film.

The sketch was created and directed by Jorma Taccone, a member of the SNL trio known as The Lonely Island – you know, the guys who write the songs about dicks in boxes and being on a boat. Starring Will Forte as MacGruber and Kristen Wiig as his assistant Vicki St. Elmo, the film guest stars SNL cast members Maya Rudolph and Bill Hader alongside Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer.

MacGruber, a special operations agent, dedicates himself to fighting crime… with his bare hands. In his Western-style flannel shirt, sleeveless bomber jacket, and creepy mullet, Will Forte is maladroit cinematic gold.

Release date: 18 June
