Move @ ABC

Tony Mills is not only one of the hardest working dancers in Scotland, he is almost one of the most restless. When not painting his body white for some Butoh style action with Derevo, touring the nation with his one man contemporary shows or MCing at Breakin' Convention or hip-battles, he is part of the Random Aspekts crew, mixing up contact improvisation, b-boy show-stopping and, for this Celtic Connections special, Scottish dance.

Hooking up with the Mid Argyll band of pipers, and training their drummers to spin their sticks and groove in a b-girl style, Random Aspekts take the idea of Scottish hip-hop into folk cross-over. To a raucous beat and the warlike drone of the pipes, Aspects throw down the classic breakin' and popping moves, play the crowd with an almost burlesque mugging, before jamming freestyle to the oddly appropriate music.

Somewhere between an experimental community project, choreographed contemporary and old school showing out, Move is an interesting attempt to connect the bravado of street dance with the apparent conservatism of Scottish folk. Not only bringing the virtuosity of the crew to a wider audience, it re-establishes the primal aggression of the bagpipes, rescuing them from picture-postcard sentimentality.

Hip-hop is always a crowd pleaser, and the addition of the band's three drummers to the dance line up suggests a connection between marching and choreography that could be further exploited.
