Linn Lorkin's Hey, Piano Bar Lady!

Tips in the jar, life on the keys

Article by Antony Sammeroff | 08 Aug 2011

Linn Lorkin (singer/songwriter/pianist/raconteuse) presents her third one-woman "truesical" about the highs and lows of her life. The first revealed her time in New Zealand, the second Paris and this, the third, centres around eight years spent in New York. Far from in any way being self-indulgent, Linn's amusing and moving tales of life as a Piano Bar Lady dating back to 1977 are altogether inviting to receive. We muse, imagining ourselves in those scene as she spices up her narrative of anecdotes by interspercing it with the songs they inspired.

The International Sofa Lady, always offered a bed but opting for the couch instead (not wanting to get too matey,) takes us to a Sunday in Soho, on holiday with her Family on the Beach, and to just A Quiet Little Table in the Corner (some of the lovely numbers in her self-produced repertoire.) Could the title piece Hey, Piano Bar Lady, be an answer to Billy Joel's classic Piano Man, also steeped in the culture of playing for "bread in the tip jar" in NYC?

A highlight moment was the story of a friend whose car got towed away while she they were dining in a restraunt with a count and an opera singer, he was eventually inspired to sing his request for his car back to the tune of the most famous Opera arias and in return received a dis...Count.

After the everyone cleared out I had the discrete pleasure of a quick jam with Linn at the piano. Unsurprisingly - she had me. That Cat's got skills.
