Rent @ Church Hill Theatre

Everybody needs help...

Article by Kirsty Tough | 05 Apr 2011

Rent is one of the longest running Broadway musicals so it seems fitting that Edinburgh Musical Theatre (EMT) should choose to perform it this April. In conjunction with Waverly Care, Scotland’s leading charity providing care and support to people living with HIV and Hepatitis C, EMT seek to highlight the struggles and prejudices people with HIV face on a daily basis.

Based on La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini this contemporary rock opera was written by Jonathan Larson whose desire was "to bring musical theater to the MTV generation." (New York Times, March 17, 1996). Tony winning Rent follows the lives of a group of creative young people living with, or knowing people who have HIV, in New York's Lower East Side.

Kenneth Pinkerton, Director of EMT said: “As a charity, we strongly believe that we have a role to play in providing other charities a stage on which they can stand to promote, educate and inform. Rent provided us with the perfect opportunity to do so and we are delighted that Waverley Care agreed to be our chosen charity for 2011 particularly where the subject matter is so relevant”.

Performances run from 5 - 9 Apr with all proceeds raised from the 7 Apr performance going to Waverly Care. Tickets priced £12 (full price) and £10 (concession). All Tue evening and Sat matinee tickets priced £8. Performances are being held at Church Hill Theatre in Morningside
