‘Snaps! First Day at Harvard Law!”

Live Review by Antony Sammeroff | 04 Sep 2011

Like, Omigod you guys! This clueless rich girl called Elle graduates from high school and follows this totally hot guy she thinks she like, can’t live without or something to law-school to prove to him she’s all serious and stuff - but really all she cares about is getting him back - then some poor kid talks sense to her for the first time in her life and she shapes up, works hard and tops the class, then drops that zero and gets herself a hero!

I know, it sounds like soooo chicklet, but it’s got all the ingredients of a great show you guys! The overture gets us totally pumped and the chorus of the first song Omigod You Guys is catchy as Christina, the dancing is just like amazing, especially in the second act opener Whipped Into Shape when they do it with… you’ll never guess… SKIPPING ROPES! Like, I know! The voices are great, the sets are great, the costumes are great and there’s even a totally cute trained Chihuahua!

Faye Brookes doesn’t do Elle Woods all Reese Witherspoon – she gives it her own spin. Dave Willet nails the part of Callahan (and even tries to nail Elle but she tells him to get lost – you go girl!) he’s all Sinatra On the Tin Pan Alley number Blood in the Water and he’s got style - Mad Props! Charlotte Harwood was great at being like, a total stuck-up bitch as Vivenne but her character turns around into being friends with Elle all of a sudden, there’s no build-up, and similarly Emmet (Iwan Lewis) could be a little more working-class-hero, he’s not hardened enough to contrast the other preppies at Harvard, but maybe that’s more cuz of the script than his acting.

Everything’s going really great until the main plotline about the court case that Elle is working as an intern on gets resolved in like, three seconds! talk about premature - anti-climax to the max! The second act is full of stuff brought over from the film that is totally unnecessary in the musical, like the hair dresser’s relationship with a dreamy postman. That time could been used to build up to a more satisfying ending instead.
