At The Illusionist's Table @ Scotch Malt Whisky Society

Review by Emma Ainley-Walker | 09 Aug 2013

Magic. Whisky. A three course dinner. What more could you really want from an evening? This year's At The Illusionist's Table is a new and intriguing set-up that combines all three of these elements into one unique show. Illusionist Scott Smith, whose charisma creates the calm and open-minded atmosphere illusion needs, spins a story to a small group of guests that aims to surprise, trick and amaze his audience in between courses.

What really brings the evening together is the way Smith has worked with the Society to join every aspect of the evening together with a common theme. His tales and his tricks are reflected by the menu and the flavours that come through the hand-picked whisky, with the drink itself becoming a key part of Smith's trickery as the evening builds up to its close.

Of course, as with any magic show and any group of people, people will try to work out how Smith does it. No one can completely suspend their disbelief, even for a few short hours. But even if some of the theories proposed may be correct, it doesn't matter. The point is not to catch out the illusionist but to let yourself succumb to the world of mystery where anything is possible. Scott Smith invites you into this world when he invites you to his table, and you'd be hard pressed not to enter it.
