LGBT History Month, occurring every February, commemorates the past struggles of the LGBT community. It's also a great opportunity to take in a month of movies, tours and assorted events. Whether you want to try speed dating, see a film, or get an inside scoop on the National Galleries, The Skinny highlights some of the best events for your calendar.

In Edinburgh, first stop should be The Tree of Life, which will adorn the Waverley Care Solas Café until the end of the month. Write your LGBT story – poignant or comic - on a tag and place it on the tree. Word Power Books, everyone's favourite literary hangout, has organised a launch party on the 4th for Footsteps and Witnesses, a collection of lesbian and gay life stories from Scotland. Continue your thirst for knowledge with a free history walk taking place at 3pm on the 8th, starting from Leith Walk and visiting sites of LGBT interest across the city. For the more arty crowd, the National Galleries are offering free tours with an art historian on the 16th. Learn about the art, its history and the galleries in a friendly stroll through the halls.

In the Borders, the LGBT Pub Quiz (venue tbc) is a fantastic opportunity to socialise and a great chance to make use of all those hours on Wikipedia! Aberdeen's Radio SHMU opens up its airwaves every Monday to LGBT-centred shows, keeping you updated on the latest events and issues. And everyone is spoilt for choice when it comes to movies: whether it's Funny Kinda Guy at the Edinburgh Filmhouse or Breakfast On Pluto at the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy, check the website for complete listings of great movies at cheap prices.

If you're expecting another boring Valentine's Day, ChildLine's speed dating could be the opportunity you need for ironic pick-up lines and honest fun at the Polo Lounge in Glasgow. Bring an open mind, nice hair and some breath mints! New events are being organised through the month, so keep checking the website and get involved - this is your month of the year.
