Skirts the edges of scene cool whilst keeping a cynical distance.

Single title: Self Obsession is an Art Form
Artist: Subliminal Girls
Label: Pop-Art
Release date: 17 Nov

In collaboration with British artist Stuart Semple, London’s Subliminal Girls put forth a novel, ultra-limited edition release in the form of a package containing signed artwork and screen printed t-shirt as well as a 10” single, all available from art galleries rather than your local record shop. Fancy that. The pretence that this might suggest is only slightly reflected in the music, which skirts the edges of scene cool whilst keeping a cynical distance. Combining whimsical, super kitsch synths and elementary guitar, they appear earnest, though the retrospective social commentary vocal akin to Pulp on B-side Posh Girls Names hints at a cheekier past. It seems, however, these scamps have seen the error of their ways. [Emma Smith]
