Sonny J - Handsfree

Single Review by Jonathan Robert Muirhead | 22 Jun 2008
Single title: Handsfree (If You Hold My Hand)
Artist: Sonny J
Label: Stateside
Release date: Out Now

The first thing that strikes you about this disc is just how compressed the sound is: beats and blasts are fired straight out of the speakers. It gives the record bags of energy to play with, and leaves you yearning to play it again, but louder. The remixes on offer here each tease out a different flavour or genre hidden within the track, be it funk, Latino jazz or simple foot-to-the-floor breakbeats. In this sense, it's similar to Utah Saints' recently remixed version of Something Good. Sonny J knows what the audience wants, and delivers accordingly on every note. In other words, it's a real old-school rave-up and there aren't nearly enough of those these days
