Richard Ashcroft - Break The Night With Colour

A decade from Britpop glory finds Richard Ashcroft sounding like Robbie Williams aping Bono.

Sleeper's Louise Wener realised Britpop was over when she heard Robbie Williams' Angels in the neighbouring studio. With its anthemic chorus and Oasis-lite production, a blander musical climate soon became mainstream.
Sadly, a decade from Britpop glory finds Richard Ashcroft sounding like Williams aping Bono in this glossy ballad with descending Beatlesy harpsichord. Though Ashcroft turns on those who dare to criticise the quality of his solo work – "Fools they think I do not know the road I'm taking" – this will appeal more to those who choose their David Gray with their IKEA wallpaper than any erstwhile Verve fans.
