Malente & Dex - Hyperactive

Single Review by Don McVinnie | 19 Aug 2008
Single title: Hyperactive
Artist: Malente & Dex
Label: Exploited
Release date: 19 Aug

Malente & Dex come together for their debut release in an inspired partnership. With five albums to his name since 2000 Malente has now earned himself the title of veteran. In stark contrast, Dex (aka Daniel Dexter) has only had one full solo release, aside from a digital release in 2004. Their music reflects their pairing. Distinctly old-school elements travel time into present-day electro with full on, heady new-school production. First up Bird Peterson throws down a hammering remix that at first sounds relatively tame, even flirting with dubstep after the opening 64. But it soon kicks up a notch morphing into a Benni Benassi-esque behemoth that will devastate the floors. Dirty Bird's Riva Starr welcome along London grime MCs Jammer & Frisco for one of two time-warping remixes but it's the remix without the vocals that really does the business, adding a spoonful of jungle and a whole load of acid to create an altogether filthy concoction.
